Suunto: your workout on the athlete's watch, the session back with you
Updated:
The athlete runs or rides with a Suunto watch, and you as the coach write their plan. Without an integration the coach's workout has to be retyped into the Suunto app, and the result sent back as a file. In EasyTrackly the Suunto connection works both ways: a published workout reaches the athlete's watch, and the completed session comes back to the calendar you see. This page explains what flows in which direction, what the athlete does and where the limits are.
What flows where
From EasyTrackly to the Suunto watch
Published runs, rides and swims built from steps, plus every strength workout, reach the athlete's Suunto app as a SuuntoPlus Guide, and the watch at its next sync with the phone. The watch guides the athlete through the workout steps. There is no file to send and no "send" button: sending starts the moment you publish.
A workout with only a description and no steps stays in the app calendar. A draft is not sent.
The 14-day window
A Suunto watch holds a limited number of workouts, so we send workouts from the next 14 days. A workout planned further ahead arrives by itself as its day gets closer - until then the workout panel shows that it is waiting outside the sending window. You can plan a whole block in advance, and the watch gets what is coming up.
From the Suunto watch to EasyTrackly
The completed session arrives in the calendar by itself, usually within minutes of the watch syncing with the Suunto app, with the full data recorded by the watch. The athlete uploads no files. When a plan in the same sport waits on the same day or the day next to it, the app suggests matching the activity to the plan.
Changes to the plan
Editing the steps and moving the date update the workout in Suunto. Deleting the workout, unpublishing it, or moving it into the past or beyond 14 days removes it from Suunto. You never have to track which version of the plan is on the athlete's watch.
Which sports
Running, cycling and swimming workouts built from steps, plus strength workouts, go to the watch. Sessions come back to the calendar for the sports the athlete kept enabled in the import section of the Suunto card. Turning a sport off stops importing new sessions of that discipline; what already arrived stays.
What the coach sees
- The athlete's calendar with plan and execution side by side.
- The imported session with data from the watch.
- The sending status of every workout on the sync tab of the workout panel. A workout with a problem has a red mark in the calendar that opens the panel straight on that tab - with a sentence on what went wrong and who should fix it.
What the athlete does
The connection is on the athlete's side and takes a few minutes. The coach cannot connect a Suunto account on the athlete's behalf.
- In the profile, on the integrations tab, they click connect on the Suunto card.
- They sign in on Suunto's site and approve access.
- They choose which sports should arrive in the calendar.
- If they want, they import the history of sessions from the last 90 days.
- They leave sending workouts to the watch on - it is on right after connecting.
The step-by-step guide is on the Suunto page in the Help Center.
Limits
- 90 days of history. The history import fetches sessions from the last 90 days, newest first. Suunto limits the number of requests, so with a longer history older sessions may arrive over the next few days - without clicking again.
- Suunto Run gets no planned workouts. The Suunto Run watch does not support SuuntoPlus Guides, so the plan does not reach it. Import works as usual.
- Threshold or FTP. When a workout cannot reach the watch, for example because a threshold is missing, the workout panel shows the reason. The coach fixes unsupported steps.
- Sending depends on the athlete. If the athlete turns sending to the watch off, import keeps working and plans stay only in the app.
- One provider account, one EasyTrackly account. A Suunto account connects to one account in the app, and the same session from two connected watches appears twice in the calendar.
Frequently asked questions
The workout did not reach the Suunto watch. What should I check?
Open the workout and its sync tab - the reason is there. The most common causes are a workout without steps, a draft, a date more than 14 days ahead, sending turned off by the athlete, a missing threshold, or an account that needs reconnecting. The watch also has to sync with the Suunto app on the phone. The Sync tab page explains how to read the tab, and Common sync problems has the full list of causes.
Does the athlete have to click anything for every workout?
No. After connecting once, the plan reaches the watch and the completed session comes back to the calendar without their help. The athlete only syncs the watch with the phone.
What if Suunto access expires?
New sessions stop arriving and plans stop reaching the watch until the athlete reconnects the account. Disconnecting stops import and sending, and the imported data stays. The How import works page explains import from every source.
Start with one athlete
Create a coach account, invite an athlete with a Suunto watch and publish one workout with steps for the coming days. You will see it in their Suunto app, and after the session - the execution in your calendar. If some of your athletes use Garmin, see the Garmin integration page. Create a coach account.
